16. Underactive detrusor

These notes are for use together with the Colley Model.

 

Voiding problems and incontinence can occur when there is no obstruction to the outflow path. The detrusor does not produce or sustain an adequate contraction to empty the bladder. An atonic or hypotonic bladder is the result and a large volume of residual urine may be present.

An underactive detrusor can coexist with bladder outlet obstruction.
